Hi Sam.  Try:

as.binary <- function(n,base=2 , r=FALSE)
{
   out <- NULL
   while(n > 0) {
     if(r) {
       out <- c(out , n%%base)
     } else {
       out <- c(n%%base , out)
     }   
     n <- n %/% base
   }
   return(out)
}
