[R] installing RMySQL

Hi,

I have problems installing RMySQL under R1.8.1 and RHlinux (kernel2.4.7).
During compilation I get:

Do I possibly have to upgrade gcc or ld?
GNU ld version 2.11.90.0.8 (with BFD 2.11.90.0.8)
gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98)
