[R] comparing characters

What sort of trouble are you having?  I just got the following from R 
1.8.0: 

 > "a"<"b"
[1] TRUE
 > "a">"b"
[1] FALSE
 > "ab"<"a"
[1] FALSE
 > "ab">"a"
[1] TRUE
