I would use gsub instead:
R> ch = " lkj df klj lkjsdf "
 " lkj df klj lkjsdf "
R> gsub("^ .", "", ch) # remove leading white space
 "lkj df klj lkjsdf "
R> gsub(". $", "", ch) # remove trailing white space
 " lkj df klj lkjsdf"
