[R] using R under windows

The following seems to work in Windows 98--I don't know about 2000.
Use my computer to open a directory.
click "view" then "folder options" and go to the "view" tab
uncheck "hide file extensions for known file types"
click reset all folders
answer yes when it asks you if you really want to do that
click ok

Reversing this (checking the "hide file extensions...") seems to produce
the problem you describe and unchecking it seems to cure it. If you can't
find that box immediately on opening the view tab, click on the folders to
open them.
