[R] math symbols in plots

I have a very strange problem that I have not been able to resolve and
am hoping that someone on the list might have an idea.
I have R1.5.1 and R1.6.1 installed under RH7.2 on a Dell Inspiron
2650. As far as I know, the RH installation is completely standard,
off the CDs, running Sawfish and Gnome.
When I make plots in R (either version), the math symbols do not
appear on the screen. There is not even a space left for them. For
example, R(mu) appears as R(). When I send exactly the same
instructions to the postscript device, the EPS file produced is
correct. I assume that there is a problem somewhere in my X
installation but I have no idea where to start looking.
