[R] chisq.test on a matrix

I'm sorry, but I done this question just because for me is not so clear the
phrase on help("chisq.test"):
"Then, Pearson's chi-squared test of the null that the joint distribution
of the cell counts in a 2-dimensional contingency table is the product
of the row and column marginals is performed".
