[R] Factors in lattice

It would help to have a reproducible example, since your statement 
is not true in general. For example,

> x <- rnorm(100)
> a <- gl(2, 50)
> b <- gl(3, 1, 100)
> densityplot(~ x | a * b)

seems to work fine for me. A traceback() [first few lines] might also 
help. (The error message is probably not from lattice, but from 
something it calls.)
