Yes. You can read out the recent values of "xaxp" for further use, but
setting them doesn't work for plot().
plot(1:10)
par("xaxp") # 2 10 4
What you can do is setting "xaxp" before using axis() as in:
plot(1:10, xaxt="n")
par(xaxp = c(3, 7, 5))
axis(1)
