No, it's a mis-understanding.  Try setting par(mex): perhaps to less than
3.6.

BTW, this is essentially Exercise 3.2 in Venables & Ripley (1999) and that
has on-line answers which suggest a different way to do this and further
tweaks you might do.

For postscript, just set a small width & height and expand the figure
afterwards.
