[R] Lots of data problems

Recently I've been having this happen frequently:
aperrin at perrin:~/microcultures$ R

Error in load(name, envir = .GlobalEnv) : error reading from connection
Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in .RData

Luckily, I have all the code to recreate the data files, but it's a pain
and takes some time. Any idea why this is happening, and what I might do
to fix it?

This is R 1.5.0 running under debian linux 3.0, kernel 2.4.18.
