[R] Problems installing 'lattice' package

All recent versions of R (1.5.x) are supposed to have grid and and lattice
already installed.  So what version of R is this, on what platform, and
how did you install R?

If you are not using R 1.5.x, the first step is to install 1.5.1.
The packages on CRAN are only tested with the current (and near-future)
versions of R.
