A first point to start is the R Data Import/Export Manual.
If you have got a version of excel you don't need to import data from
Excel too often, I'd suggest to save the file from Excel an ASCII
format, e.g. .csv.
There are other ways like ODBC connections (which doesn't work very well
with Excel, AFAIK) or the R-Excel Interface provided by Erich Neuwirth,
available at CRAN (somewhere in "Other" software).
