If you put it in a standard location like /usr/local/lib, then it
should be picked up correctly by the configure step. Notice that you
need to rerun configure (and possibly remove config.cache -- I forget
whether that is still necessary).
If that doesn't help, then you likely want to read
doc/html/R-admin.html in the sources.
