[R] Build R-patched from Source

Not relevant at this time. It is the R "next generation" branch: A
version planned to hold large-scale changes to the development
version, eventually leading to R-2.0. Currently it isn't even kept up
to date with the released versions...

(I'm still pondering whether it was a mistake to create that branch
since we don't seem inclined to use it. On the other hand, the 6-month
interval between major releases is forcing us into a rather
conservative development style and/or panicky situations whenever we
have largish last-minute changes.)
