[R]: z-scores for different factor levels

Many thanks to Joerg and Peter for their suggestions.

I had tried something using the same trick as Joerg (indexing m & s using
GEST), but despite much fiddling it didn't work. Joerg's version does work,
however. And now, with some further fiddling (to deal with missing values)
mine does too!
