[R] good book

Personally I found the following two books to be quite useful:

1. S Programming, by W.N. Venables and B.D. Ripley

2. Modern Applied Statistics with S-Plus Third Edition, by W.N. Venables and B.D. Ripley

Both are under the "Statistics and Computing" series. Both are targeted at S/S-plus, however they can be used for R programming. If you are interested in programming then John M. Chambers's "Programming with Data, A Guide to the S Language" is also good.

Number 2 above is more suitable, in my opinion, for teaching statistics using R/S-plus. Number 1 above is more for programming.

Hope this helps,

Ko-Kang Wang
