I understand that part farily well myself -- which is why I put my db
backend on Postgresql on a linux server. That way Windows can connect too,
thanks to the Windows ODBC driver for Postgresql. 

However, this is /not/ a symmetric problem as Microsoft does not supply
Linux ODBC drivers for the MS SQL backend. Windows servers most often imply
Windows client, much to the delight of Microsoft shareholders ...
