[R] layout and labels

Suppose I use layout() to make a figure with 6 subplots.
Each subbplot has no x axis title and no y axis title.
I would like to create large axis titles running across the bottom and
across the left hand side of the overall figure (not one subplot).

How can I do this? Thanks very much for any help.
