[R] why does ctrl-c kick me out of R?

Dear R-help,

The subject pretty much says it all.  It's on Mandrake Linux 7.1, dual P-3.
R-1.4.1 compiled from source, linked again Intel MKL.  Any hint is much
appreciated!!
