There is a collection of experimental patches for the R tree from
http://www.omegahat.org/RGtk
that allow one a) to create Gtk
devices without using the GNOME interface and b) to use an existing
drawing area widget as an R graphics device. When used with the RGtk
package, b) allows one to embed devices in abitrary GUIs.
Martyn Plummer and I are discussing the best ways to structure these
and other changes to provide rich support for Gtk/GNOME. Hopefully
they will be in the development version of R soon.
