[R] Adapting programs from S to R

I am adapting some Splus programs to run in R.  In the append function, if I
read the documentation correctly, the 'where' parameter in S can be
considered equivalent to the 'envir' in R.  However, what about 'frame'?  Is
there a parallel in R or do the different scoping rules make it irrelevant?
