Members of the Pascal family have that same quirk [there, 
assignment is  :=  ].  I admit to being a lazy typist (as have others 
here), and that quirk used to annoy me.  But I'd expect that most R 
code actually gets written in someone's favorite editor, and that 
that editor almost certainly has the ability to define the string "<-" 
as a keyboard macro.  That's how I learned to live with ":=" 
through several incarnations of Pascal.
