[R] installing R for unix on PC

Most Linux distributions will handle this for you. You have to 'defrag'
your drive(s) first. Make a backup of everything as repartitioning disks
can go wrong. The installer with Linux will (usually) do the
partitioning for you.

It is possible to install Linux into a container file on a Windows drive
and this is good for a 'suck it and see' installation but will be a bit
slow.

Go for a big name distro because there are packages available for them
form CRAN. Installation from source can be tricky and can fail for no
apparent (to a newbie) reason. Using a package takes away the hassle.
