[R] Mac OS X and lost underlines

I have installed the Mac OS X (Carbon) on my system; Mac OS 10.1.1
If I use fix(), which invokes edit(), sometimes (every 2nd time) the 
underlines get lost.
e.g.

function  (file="M_x_se.txt") {  cat(file) }
gets
function  (file="Mxse.txt") {  cat(file) }
.
What happens??
Can I use the emacs of the Mac/Unix-shell on my Carbon R?
