[R] adding text to persp

A very crude solution is to superimpose two plots.
Though I don't quite understand why:
persp(a)
par(new=T)
persp(a')
puts the plot of a' on top of a (R1.3.1, Windows), while
par(new=T)
persp(a)
persp(a')
doesn't.
Apologies if this is already common knowledge.
If it is unintended, I would prefer nobody fixed it!
