Ray Brownrigg did the port of the original S code to R and/or wrote the
package (not sure how much is original S code and how much is new for
R). His home page complete with email address is at
http://www.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/~ray/
We have found the package to work well but haven't bothered about trying
different projections.
