[R] Memory allocation in problem R linux

If only _that_  were true! When I don't specify vsize to be well over twice
the size of the data in memory (ie. 24Mb +), R hangs. In a nasty,
un-interuptable, press reset on the front of the PC to escape,
not-very-linux sort of way.
