[R] rotated and/or greek mtext in pictex()?

The driver does claim to support it, and does put out different commands
for 90^o rotation. They don't work, it seems.

You can use plotmath to do it, but that will not work in PicTeX.

Why are you using pictex (without a manual)?  I would have thought using
the xfig() driver and xfig itself was a less frustrating route.
