I don't know "textpad", but everything works fine with for "WinEdt"
using for example:
editor = "\"e:/programme/winedt/winedt.exe\" -c=\"R-Editor\" -e=r.ini
-V"
I would try e.g.:
1. edit(x, editor="\"textpad\" -m")
2. edit(x, editor="\"c:/fullpath/textpad\" -m")
