[R] mathematical expressions in axes labels

plotmath() is not a function, is it?
In your last mail you have used matplot(), not plotmath() --- and this
leads to some confusion, I think.

That's right. 

?matplot looks very different, because it's designed for very different
purposes:
"Plot the columns of one matrix against the columns of another."
