[R] anybody using R with TextPad?

Exactly what is ESS for the Emacs?  I'm currently using R-WinEdt and found
it to be very good.  I've also got Emacs/XEmacs under my Linux OS.  However
I can't figure out what ESS for the Emacs is.  Is it just for Windows and
how can I get/install it?
