An answer is through GRASS:


from which the package described in Computers & Geosciences (2000), 26,
pp. 1043-1052, may be accessed. There is a mailing-list too, and more
progress is described in work with Markus Neteler, who is coordinating
GRASS 5.0 development. The current package is GRASS_0.1-4, and is at:
