There may also be a dependency on the order of the lines in your
/etc/apt/sources.list file. I think the line
deb http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/debian potato main
should go before the other lines giving the usual archive sites. It
sounds to me as if you are picking up the out-of-date package in the
regular archive.
