Many thanks for the responses to my query on installing R-1.1.1 on a Debian
2.2 system (i386). I wasn't able to get apt-get to work, and I didn't want
to move to the unstable version of debian (I suspect this wasn't the issue
in any case). After fiddling for a few hours on three different (Debian 2.2
i386) machines, however, I found that the following works.

1 Use apt-get to install tcl8.0, tk8.0 and atlas2, in that order (if
they're not already installed, which they weren't on my machines).

2 ftp to cran.us.r-project.org and download r-base_1.1.1-1_i386.deb and the
doc-pdf and r-gnome .deb files.

3 Do 'dpkg -i r-base_1.1.1-1_i386.deb' and similarly for the doc-pdf and
r-gnome files.

I couldn't get 'apt-get install r-base' to work at step 2: it installs the
older version of R rather than 1.1.1 and complains incessantly about not
being able to stat source package list. This apt-get command did result in
the installation of some depends, however (zlib? libreadling2? the messages
scrolled off the top of the screen), which might mean that a few other
steps are required in addition to the above if the necessary packages are
not present on the system.

In summary, what seems to work is to (i) get the necessary depends
installed and then (ii) download the r-base .deb files from cran and
install them manually with dpkg.
