Forgive the really vague thought ... but ... I thought I heard somewhere
that RH 7.0 also shipped with an older compiler (maybe referred to as
"kgcc"?) because people were having trouble compiling the Linux kernel
with the new gcc ... according to a random web-trawl, kgcc is
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)
Perhaps this would work better?
If this works it might (?) even be possible to put the workaround into
the configure scripts, I guess ...
