First announcement and call for papers
======================================
The 23rd European Meeting of Statisticians will be held at Funchal,
capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira, from 13-18 August 2001,
under the auspices of the European Regional Committee of the
Bernoulli Society.
For more information see the conference web site
http://www.fc.ul.pt/cea/ems2001
Keynote speakers are Peter Donnelly (Oxford) on `Some statistical
challenges in modern genetics', Frank den Hollander (Eindhoven)
on `Polymer chains' and Andrew Barron (Yale) on `Information
theory in probability and statistics'. Special invited lecturers
are Soeren Asmussen (Lund) on simulation for rare events, Veronique
Gayrard (Marseille) on the statistical mechanics of the Hopfield
model and Irene Gijbels (Louvain) on nonparametric function
estimation. There will be invited paper sessions on asymptotic
statistics, Bayesian nonparametrics, bioinformatics, causal inference,
concentration of measure, disease mapping, environmetrics, finance,
perfect simulation, probability approximations for rare events,
quantum probability and statistics, statistical mechanics, statistics
of extremes, telecommunications, and time series. Contributed papers
will be accepted on these and other topics in probability, statistics
and related subjects.
Madeira is a beautiful island in the Atlantic Ocean, 1000km from
Lisbon, with stunning landscapes and a mild climate, easily reached
by air from Lisbon or by charter flights from other European capitals.
The Organizing Committee will try to show participants as much of the
island as possible. Two tours, one a full-day excursion to the rugged
and unspoilt north coast, will be included as part of the registration,
and several other excursions will be available before, during and after
the meeting. Madeira is a popular holiday destination and we recommend
early planning of your trip in order to take advantage of the good
deals that the Local Organizers have negotiated on hotels etc.
Don't be disappointed!
The chair of the Programme Committee is Anthony Davison (EPF,
Lausanne), (Anthony.Davison at epfl.ch). The Local Organizing Committee
is chaired by Dinis Pestana, Dept. Estatística, Bloco C2 Piso 2,
Faculdade de Ciências, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa Codex, Portugal
(dinis.pestana at fc.ul.pt), and Rita Vasconcelos, University of Madeira
(rita at dragoeiro.uma.pt), to whom enquiries may be addressed.
For more information, registration fees and deadlines, details about
submitting papers and deadlines, see the conference web site
