Here is a simple example; plotting a sequence of 1000 random numbers
against the sequence 1:1000.

    plot(1:1000, rnorm(1000), axes=FALSE)	#  plot with no axes
    axis(1, at = seq(0, 1000, by = 100))	#  custom x axis
    axis(2)					#  default y axis
    box()					#  box around the plot
