[R] Installing MASS Package

Hate to annoy with a topic treated by the faq and "R- Complements", but
I just haven't found the answer despite my efforts. I installed the
packages which accompany Modern Applied Statistics w/ S-Plus in a local
directory (using R INSTALL --library $HOME/R VR_etc.tar.gz). That
directory is in my R_LIBS path and the "library(MASS)" command within R
does not complain, neither does the help for MASS (or, for that matter
chem). But, "mean(chem)", complains that no chem object is found.

Finally, the command "R CMD check --library=$HOME/lib/R --debug
--vsize=10M --nsize=400k" MASS complains:

 [...]
 + test 1 -eq 0
 + echo ERROR
 ERROR
 + exit 1

Thank you for any pointers that can help me get started... the class,
spatial, and nnet packages do not appear to have any problems. Whatever
it is I've overlooked has not revealed itself to me on second, third, +
attempts.-- jd
