My MCMC message has generated some interesting comments from R people. I
will not try and deal with them individually but would comment that, as
the most successful implementation of the bazaar (rather than cathedral)
model of software development that I know apart from Linux, R would form a
natural base for MCMC code development.
Would it be possible under the GPL for BUGS (or BUGS-like code) to be
ported to a closed module (as long as it didn't use any GPL code) to run
under R? I believe the reasons for not porting WinBUGS to Linux or having
in the first place made it open source are to do with licencing but it
would be a pity to close it off or re-invent the wheel for these reasons.
The next versions will probably be mildly commercial, although I don't
know what the cost, the market size or business plans are.
Such a move may encourage the use both of R and BUGS.
John
