An RPM package of R 1.0.0 for RH6.1/Alpha is available from CRAN. This
has passed "make check", which is included as part of the build process.
No extra compiler switches or patches are required.

Why not install the RPM and try "R CMD check ctest"?

I have another thought: ctest is now available as part of the base
distribution, but previously it was distributed separately. If you have
separate copy of the ctest library, then you may be picking up the wrong
version (now obsolete) in "make check". I seem to recall being burned
by this.
