[R] fortran compile problem with R-1.1.0

I had a similar problem with SuSE 6.4: 

having f2c installed (R versions < 1.1.0 configured well using this
installation), 

$> ./configure

did not find f2c whereas

$> ./configure --with-f2c

worked fine and make test succeeded.
