[R] Things I don't understand about the graphics interface

I've recently had success in this area and thought some might be
interested in what I've found. I manage to avoid many of the issues
that have arisen in this discussion. (Reducing the image size can
have disasterous effects on line types as well as fonts.)
Most of what I produce ends up in a MS Word document, MS PowerPoint,
or a journal that wants a bitmap file. I invariably know the
dimensions of the publication's pages and columns, so I make an image
that fits.
I begin with a postscript device and use ghostview to inspect the
postscript files it produces. When it gets close to what I like, I
print a few versions until I'm happy with the font sizes, line types,
width and sometimes colour. Then I make a png file using bitmap()
which uses very similar settings to what the postscript version uses.
The result is a small file that keeps the publisher happy and still
looks like what I intended.
