[R] table()

Sorry for a stupid question but in table() I am surprised by the 
behavior of R 0.65.0 (Windows):

table(abc$a, abc$b)
# result OK, but:
zzz<-data.frame(abc$a)
table(zzz, abc$b)
Error: all arguments must have the same length

Surely I am missing something obvious. Thanks for hints!
