with mfrow the plots are "numbered" across rows and with mfcol they are down
the columns.  this is in the help for "par", but perhaps it is not clear.
the best way to see the difference is with an example ...

mfrow=c(3,2) gives six plots like this ...

1  2
3  4
5  6

mfcol=c(3,2) gives six plots like this ...

1  4
2  5
3  6
