Definitory texts are scarce and generally contained in books, although
we do have an R language definition in the works (not gotten much
beyond the table of contents at this time). 

For getting acquainted with R/S, you could do a lot worse than using
the Venables+Smith/Gentleman+Ihaka/Maechler R-notes which are
available from CRAN, or the S-notes from StatLib
(ftp://lib.stat.cmu.edu/S/SplusNotes/) on which they are built.
