[R] calendar functions

Are there any calendar- or trading-day functions in R, e.g. that tell
you whether a certain is a tuesday etc.
If i have certaion period I would like to generate a matrix

day  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc

month  1 1  1  etc . .

yeary 1971 . . .

keeping track of that some months are 30 days some 31, leap years etc.
