[R] memory efficiency in R

But from 1992, and so not applicable to either current S-PLUS or R. (It
also appeared in some versions of my S-PLUS notes of around that time.)
There is more current advice (for S-PLUS) in the V&R2 on-line programming
complements, and there will be advice and examples, including for R,
in the forthcoming `S Programming' by Venables & Ripley.
