Hi -

There are populated places in DCW as points and polygons - I assume you want the points.
The ESRI format is nontrival but points may be fairly trival. For conversion try looking at
http://gdal.velocet.ca/projects/ which will help with converting e00 and shp formats to ascii
which you can read into R.

hope this helps

Dear R-help list subscribers,

at "Digital Chart of the World", http://ortelius.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/, map
data for use with Arc/INFO and ArcView can be retrieved. Following a recent
thread on the use of maps in R-help, do you know if and how this data could
be used with R (under Linux or Windows)? I am looking for a way to show a
map (of Germany) with symbols of different size (like a SAS bubble plot)
showing certain cities associated with different values of a variable. Or
this there another way (data) to produce such a plot?

Thank You very much for any hint,

Ralf Herold, MD
