Thanks for all the replies. Some of them (with my info added) follow.

This has crossed my mind. I do not know which packages on my system
(if any) depend on a particular version of libstdc++, so I have not
removed any of them.

I had already removed all older versions of g77, gcc, and g++.

Maybe when it reaches 6.2 :)

Maybe... But many other packages using the
./configure ; make all check install
sequence have installed without problems, e.g. Python, Tcl, Ocaml.
Most importantly, my prior R version ( R-63-? ) installed cleanly.

They were all compiled together. From g77 -v:
	g77 version egcs-2.91.60 19981201 (egcs-1.1.1 release) (from
	FSF-g77 version 0.5.24-19980804)
Similar output from gcc and g++

I will try installing on Solaris next...

Cheers,
Michael
